Education can change the entire course of a child’s life in rural Ghana
Education is “the passport to human development.” Sponsor-a-Classroom gives quality education to children who would otherwise be working or on the streets. Education is the most powerful, sustainable resource to help our children change their lives and their communities.
Access to top school teachers, school supplies, and educational books are scarce and expensive in rural Ghana. Discover how you can help and meet the classrooms of Happy Kids below.

Read the profiles of each classroom and choose which one you’d like to support
Connect with the Teacher
After signing up to empower your classroom you will receive an overview on the class and ways to connect with the teacher directly if you wish to do so
Communicate with the Students
You will receive letters or drawings from the children in your classroom once a term, and have a chance to exchange letters, lessons or knowledge
Watch them Learn & Grow
The greatest gift is that of empowerment. You provide the foundation for which our teachers and children can build a better tomorrow for themselves

Meet Our Students & Teachers!

KG1
Hi from the youngest of the Happy Kids Classes! Early child development is the most and rapid period of development in a human life. These years are critical, and it takes resources to teach these children via audio, visual, written and team-oriented ways. These tiny munchkins are bright-eyed and eager to learn. As the first class at school, these kids are learning English for the first time and doing lots of creative arts! Early child development is crucial and sets a blueprint for their future learning ability.

KG2
KG2 is big bundle of fun! They are always laughing and if the teacher leaves the room, you will definitely hear KG2 running around, pulling pranks and playing their innovative games – they are so cute, it’s hard to stay serious but again, early child development sets the blueprint for their future academic abilities, so lessons are crucial! After completing their first year at school, they are expanding to more classes. While they continue to learn English, they also learn environmental studies and math!

Class 1
Say hello to crazy Class 1! Boisterous smiles and silly faces fill this classroom of kiddos who love to sing, dance and learn the basics that will serve as the base to build progressively towards Class 6. These children are starting to form self-awareness, and identify who they are in comparison to others – we are often short on books resources for this class, but the children share their books during lectures and maintain their childish spunk. A typical day in class one includes learning very Basic English Grammar, Math (addition and subtraction), and the basic Electric knowledge (the difference between simple and electric tools) – this is due to the fact that there is a lot of DIY electric work and for children with families to go home to, safety in this regard is very important.

Class 2
Class 2 are a bunch of little angels! These kids want to learn and are always ready for class. After three years of English, these kids are spending less time learning the language and more time learning religion and science!

Class 3
Bonjour from Class 3! In Class 3 each student begins to learn French. As one of the main languages in Ghana, teaching our kids French helps them prepare for the future. On top of learning a new language, this class finds time to still be creative by drawing pictures and making bracelets during lunch.

Class 5
Class 5 is learning about how circuits work in Science and becoming aware of the way Ghanaian governments are run in Social Studies. As the coursework expands, additional books and learning tools become critical – they are also critically under-resourced. True to Happy Kids, our children share their desks, their books and their insights. They love to pass notes in class, and while they can be distracted by their budding social life, this is a lovable bunch that has close bonds and big hearts.

Class 6
Say hey to the exuberant kids of Class 6! As the oldest class before junior high these kids are starting to take their classes very seriously. They are starting to read higher level books and have their final year of environmental studies. Even though this class is working hard they still have fun and are always begging to use volunteers cameras!

JHS 1
Welcome to Junior High 1 where the stakes are high – our children are preparing for secondary school and their future depends on their ability to score high enough on their exams for progressing into JHS2/3 and getting admitted to Secondary School (which costs $1K USD per child, per year). When you walk into school every morning you may notice these kids getting pulled by studies, football, and their budding interests as individuals coming into their own. Even so, these kids fight to stay focused on their studies. The children that fall behind struggle as we do not have tutors or after school learning staff – these kids depend on each other to keep up their coursework and knowledge. They are learning Social Studies for the first time and are starting to do more complex math calculations using calculators.

JHS 2
Junior High 2 are (almost) the oldest group, and they serve as influential role models for the younger kiddos – it’s important that they set the standards high and they do a good job, but they’re still kids- you can expect a lot of laughter and playful mischief to pop up during studies and break time . These are some of the oldest kids so they are leaders and role models at school. They continue to learn social studies and RME (a religion class).

Class 4
Class 4 knows how to have fun! You can catch them playing rock games together during breaks or drawing pictures. When Class 4 isn’t busy having fun, they are busy learning about government in Ghana and Science. This is typically where we see our children starting to identify their strengths in academics, and an important time to foster those strengths while investing special care in the areas they may be falling behind. Not all children start their education with Happy Kids, in fact, many arrive at different stages of their child development, and thus – identifying gaps in past learnings is very important at this age.

JHS 3
Say hi to our final grade here at Happy Kids – Junior High 3! These teenagers (or almost teenagers) are preparing for their next chapter in life, and this is a crucial year. From here, the children may go onto Secondary School – which most are fiercely determined to do (and they will if educational scores and financial resources allow). They may go to vocational or trade school, or they may go learn a family trade. In JHS3, they are reviewing all of their material, cumulating their complete education at Happy Kids to prepare for the next chapter in their life. While they may “leave the nest”, Happy Kids is always their home, and our doors are open for our family to return on breaks, during holidays, and to help guide our younger generations.

Many families in rural Ghana are forced to make a difficult choice for their children:
- Sacrifice everything (if you are lucky enough to be able to do so ), and give your child an education, a change to dream, play and create.
- Send your child to work as early as age 5 to support survival of the family - water, shelter, food.
